How to live gracefully on dark days

darkdays

It is easier to live with grace when everything is going well for us, when life happens the way we would like it to happen, and when our energy levels are high. Bad days, on the other hand, well they take a certain level of consciousness to live through with grace.

When we don’t really know how to manage ourselves, bad days can really take over our life. They hold the power to completely change our perspective of people and life. They can feel bottomless and endless.

But there is a golden darkness in these bad days. And once we learn to handle ourselves, once we learn to live with grace through days like that, we find that dark days give you a chance to rest, reflect, and nourish your soul. They give you a chance to face lessons, and work through karma.

To live with grace means to live with peace; to be unstirred by the energetic ups and downs of our system, until eventually, they begin to stabilize and you reach a peaceful and joyful level at all times.

I believe that in order for our emotions to stabilize, we have to learn to be more sensitive to ourselves. To observe the ebb and flow of our inner environment, and to be able to adapt to what our inner self needs from us at a particular time.

So whether you slip into days of melancholy, or you are truly heartbroken after a tragedy, we have to be able to recognize when we need a different level of care, and we have to be able to give that gift to our selves.

Reflections and lessons learned in life: What I know to be true.

whatiknow

Over the last few years I have been compiling a  list of lessons I am learning and realizations I am experiencing in a beloved notebook of mine.  I often reflect and read over them myself.

I wrote a post similar to this when I was 21 in the post 40 life lessons on growing up. In just the few years that have passed, so much has evolved. I feel a deeper relationship with life and myself than I ever have before. It’s nice to look at the lessons I knew to be true at 21, and look at what I believe to be true now, at 25. In my heart I hold so much gratitude for these 25 years of life.

So, here it is; a collection of what I know to be true. It is a long list, so make yourself a delicious hot drink, sit back, and enjoy.

Namaste.

Your spiritual awakening is a private and personal experience. You can listen to others about their experiences, but ultimately, you must have your own.

Joy is more important than pleasure. And you should learn the difference.

The highest form of yoga is meditation.

Never call another person ugly. Even as a “joke”.

How to break free from Karma

Some time ago I wrote a post called “Karma and Dharma: An Introduction.” which is basically a really basic description of a complex topic. Today I would like to go a bit deeper into the subject of Karma and why it is important for us to break free from our Karma.

Life Memory

From the moment you were born to this very moment that you are reading this post, you have accumulated karma. Everything you have done, or not done, everything you have thought, felt and said, your family, your home, your friends, your experiences – all these things have become inputs for your karma. Each thing influences who you are today. It is life memory. Even the way you think, feel and experience your life is influenced by your past inputs. Your body, your mind, your emotions and your energies is coloured by your karma.

Forgiveness is not a feeling.

g

In life we can get our emotions and energies in all kinds of tangles. Forgiveness is the release of a karmic knot.

It is a release. But it’s not something that be taught. It is not something you can read about, then close your eyes tightly and will yourself to do. Feelings are thick and heavy and gooey, they take time to be shifted, to move, to change direction. If you are waiting for a moment where you “feel forgiving”, it won’t come. Because forgiveness is not a feeling. Peace is a feeling and you will feel that when you forgive. Forgiveness is a force  and “force” means that it requires some action, some movement in a certain direction. It is a direction of living.

Look at the areas in your life, the spaces in your soul that need to be healed. Take some time. Take a day, take a week. Take some time to understand that there are things that you need to heal from.

Defining yourself and being defined by others

Sometimes we feel compelled to put labels on ourselves, on other people, on situations. I think this is how we attempt to make sense of life.

I think the first mistake we make is feeling we need to define ourselves and others.

The second is letting ourselves be defined by others.

Becoming a joyful person

IMG_0864My sweet little Deki playing in the bubbles a couple of summers ago. Bliss & bubbles.

I am coming to understand in my life that there is a fundamental difference between pleasure and joyfulness. I realized that for me, I need to live a joyful life, and not one of chasing pleasure.

They are not necessarily the same things.

A life of reactivity

The thing is, pleasure makes us believe we are joyful, for that moment at least. But all we are doing is reacting to pleasurable things and then think we are joyful. This is not joyfulness. This is reactivity.
