Devaki & Me

Readers who have been following along with this blog since the beginning of time, just kidding – the beginning of this blog, will know about one of the main characters in the story of my life. And her name is Devaki (pronounced they-va-ki)

She is the daughter of my mother’s best friend. And her parents are like second parents to me. They have known me since I was 9 years old, and I have known Deki (pronounced they-ki) since she was born.

Living in Kamloops together, just a 7 minute drive from each other, I watched her grow up and she watched me. She was the sweetest little girl; imaginative, considerate, thoughtful and soft-spoken. A few years later we welcomed her little brother Ishaan into the world. He was the first baby that has fallen asleep in my arms and that is one of the loveliest things that has happened to me.

Why I’m not a positive person

1492376059545.jpg

I’ve asked some friends and they said they would consider me to be a positive person. In fact, as I walk this unimaginable path of the loss of our first unborn child, so many have told me they admire my positivity.

Even my husband often says that I’m a positive person.

But really, I’m not. I’m not a positive person.

…But I’m not a negative person either.

27 years of life

1492818593522.jpg

I am 27 years old today.

I am sitting at my parent’s dining table. It is 6:30 in the morning. The house is quiet and the new risen sun is pouring its warm white light through the window and onto me.

Over the last few years I have been compiling a list of lessons, reflections and realizations I experience in my life. 2 years ago I shared everything I had written in there to that point. You can find that post here.

Since then I have learned a few more things and I would like to share them with you today.

Never touch anything with half of your heart.

I looked at everything with the

How I try to live beautifully in this moment

1472499472788

This moment is the only moment of our life. The past is a memory, the future is our imagination. We must live deeply in this moment, live with intensity and make this moment as beautiful as it can be. When we live life with this moment-by-moment awareness, there is no doubt that everything will change for the better.

“Live in the moment” is something that we often hear, and yet sometimes, it runs the risk of being too conceptual – leaving us not really knowing how to make that happen.

But this is something that feels increasingly important to me, increasingly vital to my happiness.

You see, how you do anything is how you do everything. How you live in this moment is how you live your life. We have to make it the absolute best it can be.

We cannot know what will happen tomorrow, we cannot even know for sure what will happen in the next moment. We can make plans, but we can never know for sure. I have come to realize that the only way to live happily and in the best way, is to make the best of this moment – because that will put you in the best position for the next moment. Life is connected that way.

But I needed a real way to experience it. I needed real guidelines that I could follow to increase my awareness, mindfulness and perception in my day-to-day life.

So, I keep three things in mind, before beginning any new task during my day – and I would like to share them with you today.

The power of getting somewhere

IMG_4817

So…I have been distracted with the new Facebook page I created for this blog. It’s a nice change from blogging, with shorter more frequent posts. More photographs and visuals. More personal. I wish I was better at this social media stuff, but I guess I can start here.

Today I am writing about something that is very much rooted in my own self-reflection; a pattern of complacency and tendency for mediocrity that I have noticed in myself. This blog post may be more of a rambling than anything else. Perhaps something more for my diary, than for my blog. But here it is anyway.

A Facebook page & being more open

bc9bc097-14c8-41c1-96bd-473f30154b9d

Heeeey from snapchat.

A conversation with my cousin Jay inspired me to be more open and personal on my blog. He said I do a good job on snapchat, and I said, “well, yeah, that’s because I have all of 7 friends on snapchat” and so I can be my usual, goofy, pranky self (I LOVE playing pranks).

I used to write openly on here,  a few years ago. It felt easy for me. I used to tell the stories of my life and share photographs of moments and memories. And then I went through a stage where I felt “No one wants to hear that, Malavika! Just be serious” and then cue me writing like a textbook.

A life well lived: How to nourish your mind, body & soul every day

IMG_5026

I have really been indulging in my blog for the last few weeks, but today I have a short and sweet post for you.

Every day I try to nourish myself so that I may grow into a happier person and live a beautiful and blessed life. It is a daily practice because a life well lived, a charmed life, is created one day at a time.

Writing this post has reminded me how simple it is to nourish and nurture yourself every day.

I ask myself these questions:

Unplugged: How to live life offline

Unplugged (1)

Has the internet and social media changed the human experience? Of course it has, but how exactly?

The good, the bad, and the ugly

I don’t even really need to tell you about the benefits of social media, do I? We all know it, we all experience them on a day by day basis, which is part of the reason why it is so addictive.

I love that I can stay in touch with far away friends. I love that the internet makes my world so small.

The first stage of self mastery: How to go inwards

IMG_1959

To me, going inwards means putting my attention into my internal environment – not only what is happening around me, but what is happening within me.

What is this buzzing of life energy incased within this body of mine? Who or what is “Malavika” and why is she delighted by some things and dismayed by others?

A life of reaction

Right now, this is our life – something happens in the outside world, and then something happens inside us. For example – Today it begins to rain outside. Perhaps on this particular day, this is bad news to us for many reasons. And so it rains inside us.
