South Africa Explored: Johannesburg

First and foremost, I would like to thank you all for giving me the honor of being Freshly Pressed for the 4th time in 9 months. The lucky post was How to start your day like a rockstar and believe me, waking up to an inbox full of blog comments, likes and subscriptions definitely made my morning routine that much more rock-star-ish.

To my new followers, I recently returned from a 2 week vacation in South Africa (and a couple of neighbouring countries). Here are some of the photographs from my time in Johannesburg, South Africa.

We were only in Johannesburg for a short time during our stay. As a city, it was one of my least favourites. It was quite dirty and at times, industrial. Johannesburg also has a very high crime rate, so it wasn’t safe for us to be in the city at certain times. Or so they say…

Instead, we took some hotel-organized tours to the local Lion park to play with the little baby lion cubs.

The resort we stayed at was covered with the most beautiful, brightly coloured roses.

We fed the giraffes. Giraffes have prickly tongues, deep eyes, gentle souls, and when they run, it looks like everything turns into slow motion.

My brosef and I.

Stick around for adventures and photographs from; Cape Town (my favourite!!), Zambia and Botswana, as well as articles that I was inspired to write while I have been away.

Once again, thank you so much for subscribing. I hope to make you want to hang around!

With love,

Malavika

  1. Some friends from South Africa have been staying with us here in Belgium for the holidays and now after reading your post I am more excited then ever to go visit them! Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures.
    Happy New Year,
    Jess

    1. It is a beautiful country! Cape Town was unparalleled in beauty, and I will be posting photographs from there soon, so you can see it for yourself 🙂 Thank you for your comment! Wishing you a very happy new year xxx

  2. Love your blog and congrats again for being FP. Your pictures are great, but I have a concern that the lion cubs were drugged just for human enjoyment…don’t you think that’s wrong? Or maybe I misinterpreted your comment…still..love your blog and your insights into life.

    1. Hi Sylvia,

I apologize for sounding like I was condoning any kind of cruelty towards animals! I made the comment regarding the fact that all the little lion cubs were fast asleep while big groups of people would pet them! I am sure they were not drugged (although, I guess I can’t say I know anything for sure) and from what I heard from the safari guides, lions generally sleep around 20 hours a day!

Thank you for your comment and support in my blog all this time! 🙂

  3. Dear Malu,

Enjoyed viewing/reading the blog post. You are very fortunate for, you are blessed with these kind of gifted opportunities.

I visited Cape Town in 2005 for a Conference and could see many places. Looking forward to your blog post so that I can revisit those memory lanes !!

    Best Regards,
    Renju Maman

    1. Hi Renju maman. It’s nice to see your comment here!
I do feel very lucky to even have the opportunity to visit these beautiful places. It’s all because of my family, after all!

I loved Cape Town the most. Hope you will enjoy those photographs too 🙂

  4. You’ve been Freshly Pressed FOUR TIMES in nine months?
No offense to you, but there is a BIG debate raging around WordPress over the validity of the whole FP process.
Your work is great, but some bloggers write for YEARS only to be spurned over and over by the faceless WordPress minions in charge of the main page.
    At any rate, great post!

    1. I too, don’t know enough about the process of being picked for FP to make a comment. All I know is that I have been selected 4 times in 9 months, and it has done wonders for my blog and I am very grateful!
I also have to say, that each of my posts that has been selected for FP have not been my favourite or proudest posts either. I look forward to the day I will be Freshly Pressed for a post that I am very proud of!

I recognize there must be many talented writers on wordpress that have not necessarily been Freshly Pressed. But that’s not to say they never will.

  5. Wow. Your pictures are incredible! I would have loved the opportunity to pet a lion. There is a real chance I would have to be carried out because I wouldn’t want to leave them. I also loved you post about how to start your morning off like a rockstar. Thank you for sharing!

    1. It was so neat but I think it would have been more fun if they were awake though! Maybe next time 😉
