On learning to pray

Taught to pray

My mother taught me to pray the best way that someone can teach anyone to pray. Prayer is the silent language of Indian Spirituality that everybody speaks in temples. But I didn’t know the words.

From the outside, prayers in temples looked like eyes closed, palms together at the chest, a secret communion with God. Sometimes teardrops, sometimes bought to your knees. But what was going on inside? I had no idea.

The first of a new month

I love firsts. I love the first of a new year, but also a new month, a new week, even a new day. There are so many opportunities to be re-evaluate and to refresh the feel of your life. This is something that is very important to me because I am certain about one thing – I do not want to let anymore time pass without me becoming a better human being or having a better experience of life.

Here is a glimpse of some of the things I like to look at at the beginning of a new month.

The power of getting somewhere

IMG_4817

So…I have been distracted with the new Facebook page I created for this blog. It’s a nice change from blogging, with shorter more frequent posts. More photographs and visuals. More personal. I wish I was better at this social media stuff, but I guess I can start here.

Today I am writing about something that is very much rooted in my own self-reflection; a pattern of complacency and tendency for mediocrity that I have noticed in myself. This blog post may be more of a rambling than anything else. Perhaps something more for my diary, than for my blog. But here it is anyway.

A strangeness in the woods

IMG_3669

Earlier this year, Laura, Niamh and I decided to make something beautiful together.

Long time readers may know Laura already. She’s who I go to when I need to make art. Here are some of the images we have created together.

Laura & the ocean

Laura & the roses

I had been dreaming of doing a shoot with two models, instead of one. I was curious to add another dimension and dynamic to my images.

And along came Niamh; a beautiful friend of ours who we knew would be perfect for the part. And she was!

Our plan for the photoshoot was for it to be whimsical and feminine – but somehow it transformed into something quite eerie and creepy. I’m okay with that. I have always had a bit of a dark side when it comes to art.

How to become more spiritual (Part 2/2)

IMG_6006

What exactly is spirituality? I define spirituality as your relationship with your internal self, that is – your relationship with everything that goes on within you.

Your spiritual practice should overflow into every aspect of your day

Sometimes we can make the mistake of spending 20 minutes in meditation and calling it “spiritual”, and then go about the rest of the day where nothing is spiritual.

We feel that from 9-5 we are trapped in the unspiritual reality of real life and responsibilities. And then when we get home, we may sculpt out 30 minutes of our evening for some attempt at “mindfulness.”

But spirituality is not something you do when you are home from work and then feel like a terror or act like a terror for the rest of your day.

The Joy of Nothing

IMG_5028

Today I wanted to write about the joy of nothing. I wanted to write a post the way I usually do, to explain this concept, but a poem came through instead.

Some of the most beautiful things that have happened to me are best expressed as poetry. This is a semi-formed poem. It didn’t become the poem I intended it to be, it became something else.

It was born out of a meditation and a certain knowingness I have come to understand in my life that, maybe there is nothing standing in the way of me and my soul. Maybe it takes absolutely nothing to be joyful.

How do you sleep at night?

The last month or so has been a flurry of traveling, trying to overcome jetlag and the flu, and I have been sleeping much more than I usually do. We got back to Ontario late last night, after a magical long weekend in BC with my family, and I am so glad both my husbands and my ailments have healed and I can go back to embracing LIFE and not spending the majority of the day in bed.

I have some thoughts on sleeping to share with you.

My adorable brother.

Which comes first? Rising early or getting enough sleep?

So, I’m a doctor now: On Medicine & Life

IMG_5119

I have been wanting to write this post sooner, but the last couple of weeks have flown by in a chaotic but wonderful blur. I graduated medicine. I said goodbye to Ireland and moved back to Canada.

So, I guess I’m a doctor now

When I first started out 6 years ago, this day felt like imaginary day in the distant future that would never come. Time moved so slowly. Until the last year, that is, where time moved faster than I ever thought possible.

The past is the past is the past: How to move on from your past

thepast

Hi beautiful people.

I’m starting a new small series on the topic of Breaking Karmic cycles. This series contains 3 parts.

  1. The past is the past is the past: How to move on from your past
  2. Life is not a crisis: What to do when you are tired of your own drama
  3. Breaking free from your Karmic Cycles

The past: A story we love to tell. Or a story we love to hate. Either way, as long as we keep digging into our past, we’re stuck. Because life doesn’t happen in the past. Life happens now.

Why do we look into the past?

Why is our past so mesmerizing? Why does it draw us in with so much magnetism?

Morocco – The Todra Gorge

IMG_2757

It turns out it is not so easy to maintain my blog in the final semester of my final year. But I will be back. Just 5 weeks to go. It’s quite unbelievable.

So I thought I would continue to share photographs from Morocco to tide you over while I am away attempting to wrap my head around orthopaedics (the speciality I keep conveniently forgetting about. I definitely would not succeed as an orthopedic surgeon.)

The next stop on our Moroccan adventure was the Todgha Gorge up in the high Atlas mountains.

I think the photos speak for themselves.
