Lifestyle series: Beauty products I like

IMG_1747

Today I wanted to share something that I don’t often (if ever?!) write about on my blog – which is about some beauty products that I like!

Brown lipstick is my latest “thing.” A nice option for a bold lip that is not one of the more traditional reds, berries or hot pinks. Even though I am naturally more drawn to light, bright colours, I was happy to find a darker look that I enjoy, especially for this half of the year. The colour is a gorgeous chocolate brown, and of course you can apply a thicker coat for a deeper, darker look.

Here, myself and two girlfriends of mine are all wearing the same lipstick, each of us with different shades of skin tones. I think this lipstick colours differently on each of us, but definitely suits darker complexions too.

Do I need to explain the braids? Is that weird?

(I took a photograph of myself wearing the pink lipliner but unfortunately I don’t feel like the colour in the photograph is true to life. I’ll try again some other time. )

My other “thing” has been using lipliner all over my lip. Where have you been all my life?

I loved the Smashbox self-sharpening lipliners. The colour is rich and creamy, and is so long-wearing! I have been looking for a long time for the perfect nude colour to suit my indian complexion, without making me looked washed out or like I was severely dehyrdated. I realized that I should go for medium-nudes, nudes with a hint of brown and dusky pink mixed into it.

….But after a week of use, my beloved nude lipliner broke and there doesn’t seem to be a way to save it.The flaw lies in the product design. There’s just no way to get it out again. I am saddened by this 🙁

Contour Kit

Smashbox Contour Palette (Deep contour, terracotta bronze, warm highlight)

The Smashbox contour kit came in two sets, a lighter and a deeper collection.

These colours are so flattering for tan-skin tones, especially the central terracotta shade. This set contained deeper tones, and are quite pigmented, so you don’t need very much product on your brush.

The result.

When I turned 25 I decided it was time to invest in anti-aging products, not because I am afraid of aging, but I would like to give my growing skin what it needs  *Big grin*.

I have been using the Estee Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Creme and their Advanced Night Repair which makes my skin feel dewy and plump.

You see, I also wanted to start building my “Classic” beauty collection. I love the way it looks; golden and glamorous. I have been doing periodic clear-outs, in anticipation for May 2016 when I graduate and finally move back to Canada to my husband! And honestly, I have been clinging onto items that I have dragged around with me for the last 6 years or more, that I rarely use/wear. It feels good to let that go.

Having less is becoming more important to me, so I want what I do have to be chosen with care and love.

Thank you for reading and I hope that you enjoyed this different style of post by me.

You may have also noticed that I have made some small changes to the design of this blog. My about-me section was under construction for a the few days, but I have finally updated it, so feel free to go over and read more. I know that when I stumble upon a blog I’m enjoying, I like to know more about the person behind the blog. So, there you go!

Have a happy weekend. I am so glad it is the weekend!

Love,

Malavika

    1. Hey girl!

Thanks for leaving a comment. I love that perfume too, it’s definitely one of my favourites 🙂 What is your favourite perfume?

  1. Very nice! I like that you included a photo of you and your friends showing the different skin tones with the same lip colour… Also I really wanna try the smash box contouring kit now! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Hello Miss Melon-Soda 🙂

I’m glad you like the picture. I think it’s kind of funny! I went over to my friend’s house and I was like “You guys have to try this lipstick.” It was also around halloween, so I wanted to do a impromptu creepy-sister-themed photoshoot with them (which explains the Wednesday-Adams-esque braids).

You should for sure try the contouring kit. I love it!

  2. Hey! Cool post! Being a deep thinker doesn’t preclude being vain!

I am super fair-skinned with dark brown hair, so unfortunately some of these products scare me as I hardly wear make-up and I’m afraid they’d be too dark? But I may experiment with Smashbox now (as a brand). I want to say that I also started using high quality moisturizer and serum in my twenties. I was out at a club in NYC one evening at around 2am & went to the lady’s room and saw a very beautiful older woman. I asked her what her secret was and she said I NEVER EVER go without under eye cream. She was pretty old but hardly had wrinkles around her eyes. I took her suggestion and it was recently my 49th birthday and lo, I, too, have hardly any lines around my eyes. (I also avoid the sun most of the time but take an occasional tan, just rarely.)

An inexpensive product I’ve loved forever is Alba Botanica Hawaiian Cocoa Butter (which I’ve used on my face for years). Recently I started using Burt’s Bees Repair Serum with Attar of Rose under my eyes and have noticed a very dramatic decrease in the discoloration there.

These two products are much lower in price than the Estee Lauders and work even on a small budget!

For fragrance, I use Anais Anais most often but for a better quality, deeper scent in the same family (I think called “white florals”), Fracas is an amazingly sexy perfume.

    1. Hello! So glad you liked the post 🙂 Well, I think in real-life outside of my blog it is no secret that I love shopping and make up, but on my blog, I don’t really write about that aspect of my life! Sometimes I want to share something about this, but I think “That isn’t really what my blog is about and people might get confused.” So it’s great to hear you were not too confused by this!

I understand what you are saying, if I haven’t worn make up in a while, suddenly wearing it makes me feel just TOO made up. I remember a few years ago when I was 21, I wore more make up than I do now. I wore eyeshadow daily and it was no big deal. Now a days, my make up routine is much lower maintenance; foundation/BB cream, eyeliner, countour/blush and I’ll call it a day. On some days when I put on a little bit of eyeshadow, I feel so made-up, and at times inappropriately over dressed! It’s interesting the things we get used to.

I think that these darker lip shades can look gorgeous on someone with a fair-skinned, dark haired complexion like yourself. But you’re right, it would definitely be a different look to what you are used to. It’s something you would have to work yourself up to!

I do really like smashbox, and as you can see I bought a lot of products from them. The girl at the smashbox counter was very helpful and clearly a very good saleswoman.

Thank you for all your tips. Eye cream eh? So that’s the magic secret. Good to know. I will look into that. I adore Burts Bees as a brand, so I will take heed of your advice and stop by the Burt’s Bee’s section next time I’m shopping.

What is your name, if you don’t mind sharing it?

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

      Love,
      m
